H1N1 / Swine Flu Vaccination · South Delhi

Swine Flu (H1N1) Vaccine in Delhi — Cost & Who Needs It

There is no separate swine flu injection in India — H1N1 is already covered by the annual quadrivalent influenza vaccine, ₹1,200–₹1,800 per dose including the physician review. Best taken April to June before the monsoon flu peak, safe in any trimester of pregnancy, and available same-week at both South Delhi clinics.

Swine flu (influenza A H1N1) vaccination with Dr. Sanjay Sachdev (MBBS, MNAMS) at Friends Colony East and Maharani Bagh. The strain is built into the standard quadrivalent flu vaccine, so one annual dose covers H1N1 along with the other circulating strains — with same-day fever assessment if you are already unwell.

Swine flu and the flu vaccine are the same shot

Since the 2009 pandemic, H1N1pdm09 has become a seasonal strain and is included every year in the WHO-recommended northern hemisphere influenza vaccine composition. That means the quadrivalent vaccine stocked at the clinic protects against H1N1 (swine flu), H3N2 and two influenza B lineages. Nobody in India needs a standalone swine flu injection.

Why Delhi sees H1N1 twice a year

North India has a dominant monsoon influenza peak (June–September) plus a winter wave (December–February). H1N1 circulates in both. Poor winter air quality worsens respiratory outcomes, and in adults with diabetes, heart failure or COPD an H1N1 infection is a common trigger for hospital admission rather than just a week in bed.

Priority groups

Adults over 65 · pregnancy, any trimester · diabetes · coronary disease and heart failure · asthma and COPD · chronic kidney or liver disease · obesity · immunosuppression, cancer treatment or post-transplant · healthcare workers · caregivers of infants under 6 months · households with a high-risk member.

If you already have symptoms

Sudden high fever with severe body aches and dry cough in an outbreak period is treated as suspected influenza. Warning signs needing same-day review: breathlessness, chest pain, saturation under 94%, persistent vomiting, drowsiness or confusion, or fever beyond five days. Oseltamivir is most effective within 48 hours of onset and is prescribed where risk factors or severity justify it. Vaccination is given after recovery.

Safety and side effects

Injectable influenza vaccines in India are inactivated and cannot cause flu or swine flu. Expect a sore arm for a day or two, sometimes mild fever or fatigue for 24–48 hours. You are observed for 15 minutes. Mention severe egg allergy, a previous reaction to influenza vaccine, or Guillain–Barré syndrome after a prior dose.

Frequently asked

8 answers
Is there a separate swine flu vaccine in India?
No separate injection is needed. Swine flu is influenza A H1N1pdm09, and the H1N1 strain is already one of the components of the standard quadrivalent influenza vaccine given in India. Taking the annual flu shot is how you get swine flu protection — there is no extra H1N1-only vaccine to buy.
What does the swine flu (H1N1) vaccine cost in Delhi?
₹1,200–₹1,800 per dose for the quadrivalent influenza vaccine that covers H1N1, including the injection, a short physician review and a written immunisation record. Family bookings of three or more in one visit are quoted at a bundled rate.
When should I take it in Delhi?
April to June is ideal, ahead of the North India monsoon influenza peak, and protection carries into the December–February winter wave. Immunity develops about two weeks after the injection and lasts 6–12 months, so a dose taken during an active outbreak still helps.
Who is most at risk from swine flu?
Adults over 65, pregnant women, people with diabetes, heart failure or coronary disease, asthma and COPD, chronic kidney or liver disease, obesity, and anyone on immunosuppressants or after transplant. H1N1 has historically caused severe pneumonia in younger adults too, so healthy adults under 50 are not automatically low risk.
Is the H1N1 vaccine safe in pregnancy?
Yes, and it is specifically recommended in any trimester. Pregnancy raises the risk of severe H1N1 illness, and maternal antibodies cross the placenta to protect the newborn in the first months before infant vaccination is possible.
How do I tell swine flu from an ordinary viral fever?
H1N1 typically starts abruptly with high fever, severe body aches, headache and dry cough, often with sore throat. Breathlessness, chest pain, persistent vomiting, confusion or oxygen saturation below 94% mean you should be seen the same day. Testing (RT-PCR on a throat/nasal swab) is used where the answer changes treatment, and oseltamivir works best when started within 48 hours.
Can I take the swine flu shot with other vaccines?
Yes. Influenza vaccine can be given at the same visit as pneumococcal, shingles, Td/Tdap or COVID vaccines at separate injection sites — the usual approach for older adults and people with chronic disease so they make one visit instead of three.
Where can I get the swine flu vaccine in South Delhi?
At C-58 Friends Colony East or Maharani Bagh Community Centre, Monday to Saturday 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM by appointment, with cold-chain stored vaccine. WhatsApp +91 98110 78388 to confirm a slot.
