HPV vaccination is most effective between ages 9 and 14, when two doses six months apart are enough; from 15 years onwards three doses are needed. What HPV vaccination prevents

Cervical cancer — the second commonest cancer in Indian women and almost entirely HPV-driven — plus vulvar, vaginal, anal, penile and oropharyngeal cancers, and genital warts. High-coverage vaccination programmes have already cut pre-cancerous cervical lesions by more than 80% in vaccinated cohorts. This is one of very few vaccines that prevents cancer outright.

Schedule by age

9–14 years: two doses, 6–12 months apart. 15–45 years: three doses at 0, 1–2 and 6 months. Immunocompromised (any age): three doses. A delayed dose does not mean restarting — the course simply continues. Both girls and boys should be vaccinated, ideally before sexual debut.

Cost and vaccine choice

Gardasil 9 (9-valent, covers HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58): ₹4,000–₹6,000 per dose. Cervavac (Indian quadrivalent, covers 6, 11, 16, 18): ₹2,000–₹3,000 per dose. Both prevent the two serotypes (16 and 18) responsible for roughly 70% of cervical cancer; the 9-valent adds coverage of five more oncogenic types. Adults 27–45 — is it still worth it?

Often yes, and this is a genuine judgement call rather than a formula. The benefit depends on likely prior exposure, current relationship pattern, immune status and screening history. Dr. Sachdev discusses expected benefit honestly instead of selling three doses by default — and if the benefit is small in your case, you will be told.

Vaccination does not replace screening

Cervical screening continues after vaccination: HPV DNA testing every 5 years from age 30, or a Pap smear every 3 years. The vaccine covers most, not all, oncogenic types. Vaccination plus screening is the combination that eliminates cervical cancer risk in practice; either alone leaves a gap.

Yes. It has one of the largest post-licensure safety datasets of any vaccine, with hundreds of millions of doses given. Expect arm soreness, occasional mild fever or headache. Fainting can occur in adolescents shortly after injection, which is why we observe for 15 minutes seated.
Can I take it if I am already married or sexually active?
Yes. Prior exposure to one HPV type does not mean exposure to all nine covered types, so protection is still gained. It is not given during pregnancy — doses are deferred until after delivery, and breastfeeding is fine.
