Cervical cancer — the second commonest cancer in Indian women and almost entirely HPV-driven — plus vulvar, vaginal, anal, penile and oropharyngeal cancers, and genital warts. Adults 27–45 — is it still worth it?
Often yes, and this is a genuine judgement call rather than a formula. The benefit depends on likely prior exposure, current relationship pattern, immune status and screening history. Dr. Sachdev discusses expected benefit honestly instead of selling three doses by default — and if the benefit is small in your case, you will be told.
Vaccination does not replace screening
Cervical screening continues after vaccination: HPV DNA testing every 5 years from age 30, or a Pap smear every 3 years. The vaccine covers most, not all, oncogenic types. Vaccination plus screening is the combination that eliminates cervical cancer risk in practice; either alone leaves a gap.
