Who should be vaccinated

Schedule and cost
Option A: a single dose of PCV20 — the simplest current schedule where available. Option B: PCV13, then PPSV23 at least 12 months later (shortened to 8 weeks in immunocompromised adults). PCV ₹3,500–₹6,000 per dose; PPSV23 ₹2,000–₹3,000. Not an annual vaccine — for most adults the course is completed once, with a PPSV23 repeat after 5 years only in defined high-risk groups.
Pair it with influenza vaccination
The strongest evidence for reducing pneumonia admissions in older adults comes from having both the pneumococcal and the annual influenza vaccine. Influenza frequently opens the door to secondary bacterial pneumonia, so the two work together. Both can be given at the same visit at separate sites.
What it does and does not cover
It covers the pneumococcal serotypes responsible for most severe adult disease. It does not prevent viral pneumonia, mycoplasma, tuberculosis or COVID. Being vaccinated therefore does not mean a new fever with breathlessness can be ignored — it means the most dangerous common bacterial cause is far less likely.

Does the pneumonia vaccine prevent all pneumonia?+
No, and it is important to be accurate about this. It targets Streptococcus pneumoniae, the commonest bacterial cause and the one most likely to cause bloodstream infection and ICU admission. Viral pneumonia and other bacteria are not covered — which is why the flu vaccine is a complement, not an alternative.
Can it be taken with the flu vaccine?+
Yes, at separate injection sites in the same visit — this is the standard approach for older adults and people with chronic disease, and it is the combination with the strongest evidence for reducing hospital admissions.
What are the side effects?+
Arm soreness and mild swelling for 1–3 days, sometimes low-grade fever or fatigue. PPSV23 tends to cause slightly more local reaction than PCV. Serious reactions are rare; you are observed for 15 minutes after the injection.
Is it useful after a recent pneumonia or COVID?+
Yes. Recovery from pneumonia does not confer broad protection, and post-pneumonia or post-COVID lungs are more vulnerable to the next infection. Vaccinate once the acute illness has settled, typically 2–4 weeks after recovery.
