Children's Flu Vaccination · South Delhi

Flu Vaccine for Children in Delhi — Age, Doses & Timing

Children can have the influenza vaccine from completed 6 months of age. A first-ever vaccination between 6 months and 8 years needs two doses 4 weeks apart; after that one dose a year. Babies aged 6–35 months usually get a half-volume dose. April to June is the best window in Delhi.

Annual influenza vaccination for infants and children with Dr. Sanjay Sachdev (MBBS, MNAMS) at Friends Colony East and Maharani Bagh. Age-appropriate dosing, correct two-dose schedules for first-time vaccination, cold-chain stored vaccine and a written record for the child's immunisation file.

6 months is the starting line

Influenza vaccine is licensed from completed 6 months of age. Infants below that age cannot receive it, yet they carry one of the highest risks of severe influenza. The protection that works for them is indirect: the mother vaccinated during pregnancy passes antibodies across the placenta, and every adult and older sibling in the household is vaccinated so the virus does not reach the baby.

Two doses the first time, one every year after

A child aged 6 months to 8 years who has never had an influenza vaccine before needs two doses at least 4 weeks apart. One dose alone gives incomplete protection in this group. From the next season onwards a single annual dose maintains it. Children 9 years and older need only one dose, first time or not. If you are unsure what your child has had before, bring the immunisation card and we will work it out at the visit.

Dose volume by age

Children aged 6 through 35 months generally receive a 0.25 ml dose of quadrivalent influenza vaccine, subject to the licensed schedule of the brand in stock. From 3 years onwards the standard 0.5 ml dose is used. Some products are licensed at full volume from 6 months — the correct dose is confirmed against the child's age and the specific vaccine on the day rather than assumed in advance.

Timing for a Delhi child

North India has a monsoon influenza peak from June to September and a second winter wave from December to February. Vaccinating in April to June covers both. Immunity develops about two weeks after the injection and lasts 6–12 months, which is why the dose is annual. For a two-dose first-time schedule, start in April or early May so the second dose lands before the monsoon.

Children who should not miss a year

Asthma and recurrent wheeze · congenital heart disease · chronic kidney or liver disease · type 1 diabetes · neurological and neuromuscular conditions · immunosuppression, cancer treatment or post-transplant · long-term steroid or aspirin therapy · children in the same house as an infant under 6 months or an elderly grandparent. In these children influenza is far more likely to mean a hospital admission than a week at home.

What the visit looks like

A short review of the child's age, weight, immunisation history, allergies and current health, then the injection into the thigh (younger infants) or upper arm, followed by 15 minutes of observation. You leave with a written record showing the vaccine name, batch, date and the due date of the second dose if one is needed. Mention severe egg allergy, a previous reaction to influenza vaccine, or Guillain–Barré syndrome after a prior dose.

Frequently asked

9 answers
From what age can a baby get the flu vaccine?
From completed 6 months of age. Babies younger than 6 months cannot be vaccinated, so they are protected indirectly — by vaccinating the mother during pregnancy and everyone in the household who handles the baby. This is called cocooning and it is the only protection available in the first half-year of life.
How many doses does a child need?
A child receiving influenza vaccine for the very first time and aged between 6 months and 8 years needs two doses, given at least 4 weeks apart, to build adequate immunity. From the following season onwards a single annual dose is enough. Children aged 9 years and above need only one dose even for a first-ever vaccination.
Is the dose different for a 6-month-old?
Yes. Children aged 6 through 35 months usually receive a half-volume (0.25 ml) dose of the quadrivalent influenza vaccine, depending on the brand's licensed schedule. From 3 years of age the full adult volume (0.5 ml) is used. The dose is decided at the visit against the child's exact age and the specific product in stock.
When is the best month to vaccinate a child in Delhi?
April to June, ahead of the North India monsoon influenza peak, with protection carrying into the December–February winter wave. If you are starting a two-dose schedule, begin in April or May so both doses are complete before the monsoon. A child vaccinated mid-season still benefits.
Can the flu shot be given with routine childhood immunisations?
Yes. Influenza vaccine can be given at the same visit as other routine vaccines at separate injection sites, so a due immunisation and the flu dose can be combined into one appointment rather than two trips.
What side effects should I expect in a child?
Soreness, mild redness or swelling at the injection site for a day or two, sometimes low-grade fever, reduced appetite or unusual sleepiness for 24–48 hours. Injectable flu vaccines in India are inactivated and cannot give a child influenza. Every child is observed for 15 minutes after the injection.
Should a child with asthma or a heart condition be vaccinated?
Especially so. Children with asthma, congenital heart disease, chronic kidney or liver disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, immunosuppression or those on long-term steroids are at higher risk of severe influenza and hospital admission, and annual vaccination is strongly recommended for them.
My child has a cold — can the vaccine still be given?
A mild runny nose without fever is not a reason to delay. A child with moderate or high fever or an active illness is rescheduled until recovery. If your child is unwell on the day, WhatsApp +91 98110 78388 and we will move the slot rather than have you travel.
Where can I get a child's flu vaccine in South Delhi?
At C-58 Friends Colony East or Maharani Bagh Community Centre, Monday to Saturday 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM by appointment, with cold-chain stored vaccine and a written immunisation record for the child's file. WhatsApp +91 98110 78388 to book.
